The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Leland Firestone can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

A Labor of Love

Rosie and I had the pleasure of meeting Lee and LeGene in 1995 - 1996 when I was serving on the architectural committee and Lee asked that the committee review their plans for a unique and beautiful home to be built on a site next to the beautiful Conejos River. It was evident that Lee was taking on a big task since he was planning to do most of the building himself except for plumbing, electrical and the foundations. The committee was a little skeptical at first until Lee showed photos of the construction work he had done including beautiful interior wood trim and woodwork. There was no doubt left that Lee could get it done.

We were amazed as we watched Lee and LeGene tackle their project from rolling large stones to incorporate and even to tackling their ‘beach’. Every detail that they incorporated into their ‘lodge’ was meticulously thought out – he loved period and antique items and they spent innumerable hours hunting for pieces that would give the cabin an old time feeling, but most importantly to them, a warm, welcoming, hospitable atmosphere that they would share with their many friends, neighbors and guests. It was a labor of love and is an amazing piece of work. Each of the many rooms had a theme and was named and decorated accordingly. LeGene designed and hand-made beautiful stained glass panels that were incorporated in the transoms and beside the doors to go along with the theme. We have a beautiful glass piece donated by LeGene that we were fortunate to obtain at an auction benefiting the scholarship fund.

Lee didn’t rest with the completion of their home, but was always engaged in doing more projects in and outside of the home including restoring several old historic structures that were part of their property.

Lee and LeGene not only got it done, but he then took his tremendous creative energy and building skills into the local community, sharing and helping to design and build wherever he could. We and folks along the Conejos will always have wonderful memories of Lee.
