Obituary for Carl Hugo Zietz Jr.

Longtime Alamosa resident Carl Hugo Zietz, Jr., 86, died October 19, 2018 at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa.

Carl’s life began on September 18, 1932 in Denver, Colorado the proud son of Carl Hugo Zietz, Sr. and Helen Johnson. He received his Bachelor of Arts in business and geology from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1956. He entered United States Navy officer candidate school in Newport, Rhode Island in 1956 and received his commission as an ensign in 1957. He would go on to serve in United States Navy heavy attack squadrons VAH 8 and VAH 12 until he was honorably discharged in 1962. Carl married Frances Louise Dorsey on June 21, 1969 in Alamosa, Colorado. They enjoyed 19 wonderful years together until her passing in June 23, 1988. In 1989 Carl found a loving partner in Shirley Wright and enjoyed 19 years together until her passing in 2008.

Following his service in the Navy, Carl worked for more than 30 years as a Salesman for Wagner Caterpillar, Inc. selling heavy equipment and retired in 1994. Carl was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors. He also liked to travel, golf, play bridge, riding his bicycle and hiking. Carl was a diehard Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, Denver Nuggets and an Adams State sports fan and enjoyed watching their games. He was a true conservationist, whether it was for water, game or otherwise and believed in preservation for future generations.

He is survived by his children Carl H. (Kimberly) Zietz, III of Mount Vernon, Washington, Randy L. (Dawne) Tourville of Loveland, CO and Sharon M. Roybal of Parker, Colorado; his brother Fred A. (Jan) Zietz of Lakewood, CO and his sister Joan Hunzeker of New Braunfels, TX, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, as well as numerous extended family and friends.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frances and his brother-in-law Bill Hunzeker.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:30am on Saturday, October 27, 2018 followed by a funeral service at 11:30am at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. Interment with military honors will take place in the Alamosa Cemetery. Contributions in his memory are suggested to The American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, The American Legion of Alamosa and The VFW of Alamosa.
