Obituary for Shirley Rechel

Alamosa resident Shirley A. Hillary Rechel, 84, passed away peacefully February 18, 2014 at the Bridge at Alamosa assisted living facility.
Shirley was born in Brawley, California on January 28, 1930 the daughter of Arthur and Edith L. Lampson Hillary. She married Paul Cowan Rechel in Portland, Oregon on August 26, 1950 and they would spend the next 36 years together until his death on May 31, 1986.
Shirley attended school at the University of Colorado and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1970. Shirley was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority which began in her college days and has held this membership for the past 50 years. She was also a member of the Sierra Blanca Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #43, the Women’s Citizenship Club since 1981, and was considered a Red Cross Volunteer during her time volunteering as a Gray Lady at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa. Shirley worked for more than 20 years until her retirement at the Jefferson County Department of Social Services in geriatrics and day care operations for children.
Shirley was a Star Trek fan and enjoyed reading Science Fiction. In her spare time she liked to go to the opera and antique hunting. She had a soft spot for cats and loved them dearly.
She is survived by her children Eric Rechel of Grand Junction CO, Holly (Dennis) Felmlee of Alamosa, Jennifer Rechel of Riverside, CA and Kathryn (Andrew) Rechel McKenzie of Long Beach, CA; her two grandchildren Brianna Felmlee and Prester John (Kelli Gunderson) Felmlee.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother Richard Hillary.
Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service with a reception to follow will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2014 at the Bridge at Alamosa. Contributions may be made to a local cat rescue group in her memory.
