Obituary

Dick Brumfield, 78, passed away at home Monday March 25, 2019, surrounded by his family. Dick married the love of his life, June, on September 2. 1962, in La Veda, CO, and spent 57 years in love. Dick graduated from the University of Denver and returned to Monte Vista where he worked for Schall Chemical Supply. He was known throughout the agricultural community in the San Luis Valley and across the country. Following retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his family and hunting with his two sons, Scott and Greg. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing which he shared through his involvement in the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society. His passion for classic cars and music were only matched by a good breakfast at the Campus Café with his friends. Dick adored spending time with his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mildred Brumfield. He is survived by his wonderful wife June; sons Scott (Carrie) Brumfield of Monte Vista and Greg (Debbie) Brumfield of Grand Junction; his sister Katherine (Ted) Brumfield Boyer of Germantown, TN; his sister-in-law Glenda Bedoka of Chino Hills, CA; brother-in-law Mike Sanner of Monte Vista; and his beloved dog Mutt.

Services will be held at Rogers Family Mortuary in Monte Vista on April 16 at 10:00 am.

During my career as forest entomologist for the Colorado State Forest Service, I met Dick Brumfield. Mountain pine beetle was a major issue in many forested mountain areas. Dick and I began our association strictly talking about chemical applications but soon became true friends. He was a salesman, to be sure, but seemed genuinely interested in doing the right thing, in being a man of his word, in doing right by applicators, landowners and our natural resources. My fondest memory of Dick, besides our many lengthy phone chats and meals together, was a trip he instigated to Sante Fe, New Mexico during the height of the major pinyon pine ips epidemic. He put me in front of many battle-weary arborists, ran interference, paid what it was worth and also sent me home with a big bag of SLV potatoes. Since retiring, there are many things and people I miss about my job and Dick Brumfield will always be one of them. Dave Leatherman, Fort Collins

Dick was a business associate as well as a good friend. I met Dick back in the 1970's when I started in the tree business in Ft. Collins. Over the years, I did a lot of business with Dick. We had many good conversations, lunches, coffee, etc.. He was a wealth of information and always willing to share it. He was more than just a chemical rep, and I will always have fond memories of our time together. He was very good for our industry, he was a good man, and he will be missed.
