Obituary for Rex William Hogue

Rex William Hogue
Longtime Alamosa resident Rex William Hogue, 96, died December 23, 2015 at his home.

Rex was born December 13, 1919 in Canon City, Colorado to Alfred and Hattie Elizabeth Britton Hogue. He married his wife of nearly 69 years, Virginia Ellen Divine on February 28, 1942 in Joplin, Missouri. Rex served honorably as a Staff Sergeant and Ordnance Supply Technician in the United States Army Air Corps, which would later become the U.S. Air Force, during World War II and in the Pacific Theatre.

Following his time in the military Rex eventually worked his way back to the San Luis Valley and worked for many years in construction and as a homebuilder, building more than 50 homes throughout the San Luis Valley. During his working career he was the foreman overseeing the building of Evans School in Alamosa, which was completed in 1956. Rex enjoyed the outdoors and rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy time spent with family or friends by his side. Rex also also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He took up golf in his 50’s and liked to play frequently, playing as recently as this year. Rex had the fortune of three holes in one at different times while playing golf. He was also a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E. 1297 in Alamosa. Rex lived his life with integrity, honesty, humor and charm and was dearly loved and respected by all who knew him.

He is survived by his children: Roger (Mary Jo Merkley) Hogue of Monte Vista, Paul (Shellie) Hogue of Pagosa Springs; his grandchildren: Kari Jo (Arlo) VanRy, Krista (Jason) Cowen, and Kendra (John) Jameson; his great-grandchildren: Cayce, Alan, Chelsie, Trevor, Tylor, Tegan, Micah, Kalie, Staisha, Christopher, Jaden, Jacob and Jenna.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson Tim Hogue and his wife Virginia.

Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life will be held at the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1297 in Alamosa on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Contributions in his memory are suggested to Hospice del Valle.
