Obituary for Ralph Vernon "Vern" Rominger

Longtime Del Norte resident Ralph Vernon “Vern” Rominger, 85, died April 9, 2013 at Memorial Hospital Central in Colorado Springs surrounded by his family.
Vern was born March 5, 1928 at home in Eads, Colorado to his parents Ralph and Mary Beach Rominger. He married Caroline Chenoweth on June 17, 1951 and they were married 57 years prior to her death in 2009.
Vern graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Construction Engineering. He then returned to the San Luis Valley to start a family business in Plumbing and Electrical Contracting and to operate Rominger’s Hardware stores.
Vern served as a Rio Grande County Commissioner for 24 years and was very community minded. He served for 30 years as Chairman of the board for Del Norte Federal Savings and Loan that later became Del Norte Bank, President of Del Norte Rotary, President of Colorado Counties Inc., President of Del Norte Chamber of Commerce, Board member for Del Norte Airport and was instrumental in the airport expansion.
In his spare time he loved spending time in the outdoors hunting, fishing and camping. His hobby and second love was farming. He greatly enjoyed working on the farm growing alfalfa and loved operating and repairing his farm equipment.
He is survived by his children Lynne (Tyler) Brown of Lubbock, Texas; Kent (Mary Sue) Rominger of Salt Lake City, Utah; his grandchildren TJ Brown of Del Norte, Jordan Brown of Fowler, Kristin Rominger of Salt Lake City, UT; his brother Harold (Margaret) Rominger of Monte Vista; his sisters-in-law Fran Rominger of Palo Alto, CA and Colleen Rominger of Carbondale, CO; his brother-in-law Carl Smith of Topeka, KS; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brothers Jack and Jim Rominger.
Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013 at the Pioneer United Church in Del Norte. Contributions are suggested in Vern’s memory to either the Pioneer United Church or to the Astronaut Rominger Airport in Del Norte. Both may be made through the funeral home office.
