Obituary for Maurice Delbert Stillings

Maurice Delbert Stillings passed away on February 5, 2015 at the Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake in Monte Vista, Colorado. Maurice was born July 5, 1926, to Delbert and Blanche Stillings in Monte Vista, Colorado. He graduated from Monte Vista High School in 1945, and served in the United States Army during 1945-1946. Maurice met his wife, Helen Ochsner, in Chicago at the National 4-H Club Congress in 1945, while both were delegates from their respective states. They were married July 31, 1949, in Madison, Nebraska. Helen preceded him in death in 2003.
Maurice and Helen farmed and ranched in Alamosa County, raising excellent potatoes and cattle. In addition to raising their own three children, they cared for many foster children in their home and were very active in their churches, the First Christian Church in Alamosa and later the Christian Reformed Church in Waverly. 4-H continued to be a large part of their lives as long as they were able to teach. Maurice was also involved in the Colorado Cattlemen's Association and Farm Bureau, and after retiring he was very active in the Gideons International. He and Helen enjoyed traveling around our country visiting relatives and friends, as well as going abroad to visit their daughter, Irene, when she was a missionary or to help with Wycliffe Associates building projects.
Maurice is survived by his sons Charles (Margaret) Stillings of Monte Vista, and Glen (Mary Lynn) Stillings of Alamosa; granddaughters Shannon Stillings of Monte Vista, and Carol Stillings of Colorado Springs; grandsons Keith (Kacy) Stillings of Cedaredge, Colorado, and Carl (Kyra) Stillings of Monte Vista; great-grandchildren Jessie and Logan Stillings of Cedaredge; sisters Cynthia Fischer of Fargo, North Dakota, Leola Roberts of Monte Vista, and Lorraine Holland of Antioch, Tennessee, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles Stillings, sister Lois Barton, his wife Helen, daughter Irene Stillings, and grandson Brian Stillings.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on February 6, 2015 at the Monte Vista Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the Alamosa Christian Reformed Church on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Gideons International in care of Rogers Family Mortuary.
