Obituary for Louis M. Harmsen

Louis Martin Harmsen passed away Friday, October 31, 2014 at Conejos County Hospital, attended by his wife Betty. He had experienced age related illness for several years prior to hospitalization on October 27.
Louis was born November 8, 1920 in Pueblo, Colorado to Carl and Fredika (Holthusen) Harmsen. The Harmsen family, including son Chris and daughter Katie, resided in Bountiful Colorado. Louis grew up as a typical farm boy following the footsteps of his father. In addition to agriculture they raised hogs and range cattle.
During the late 1930’s and early 1940’s the young people of the bountiful community participated in home parties which included parlor games such as post office and spin the bottle. It was at these gatherings that Louis and Betty paired off. Louis and Betty C. Ross were married June 8, 1943 in Taos, New Mexico. They observed their 71st anniversary this past June.
They continued farming and ranching, eventually adding sheep to the fold while raising their three children; Lee, Gordon, and Joann.
The summers of 1977-1978 Louis was hired as a cattle driver for range cattle in the Brazos. This was an event that he thoroughly enjoyed. In later years he worked with the Jack Vance family’s Bountiful Farms, which he loved to talk about at the end of the day. Louis and Betty square danced for many years.
Louis graduated from La Jara High School with the class of 1939. He was a member of the United Church of La Jara, and was a member of the La Jara Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years.
Louis is survived by his loving wife, Betty, son Gordon (Judy) Harmsen, Daughter Joann (Kenneth) Baron of Spring, Texas,; Grandchildren, Cindy (Bill) Duckworth, Cathy Barttelbort, James (Janet) Reynolds, Craig (Whitney) Harmsen, Rachelle (Chase) Bunting; great granddaughters, Bailey and Brittney Duckworth. As well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and son, Louis Lee Harmsen.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 10 A.M. at the United Church of La Jara. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of your choice or to the La Jara Volunteer Fire Department.
Visitation Wednesday 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the United Church of La Jara at 522 Walnut St. La Jara, Colorado.
