Obituary for Kathryn Ann Ortiz de Gonzalez

Kathryn Ann "Kino" Ortiz de Gonzalez was born on October 4, 1952, in Pueblo, CO and passed away June 24, 2014, in Sugar Land, TX, after a courageous four and one-half year battle with cancer. Kathy was raised in Alamosa, Colorado, the second of five children born to Cirilo "Beef" Ortiz and Anna Marie (Vigil) Ortiz. Kathy graduated from Alamosa High School in 1970 and received both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Adams State University. After college, she worked as a probation officer in Alamosa before receiving a Rotary International Scholarship to attend the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, where she met her future husband, Francisco J. Gonzalez, her beloved husband of 33 years.
In 1980, Kathy and Francisco moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she worked as a Federal Probation Officer. They subsequently moved to Sugar Land, TX (Houston) where Kathy worked in the computer industry, finishing her career working as a Contracts Manager with the Product/Server Groups of Hewlett Packard.
She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Kathy always put other people's needs before her own - she would drop everything in order to help others, which was a true tribute to her loving nature. She followed world events closely and was a strong advocate of life-long learning. She had an infinite amount of patience and was known for her quick smile, kindness and compassion. The last several years, as Kathy dealt with her health challenges, her strong spirit, wit, keen intellect and love for family and the San Luis Valley never faded. Everyone she touched was blessed by knowing her. Her loving and devoted family was with her when she died peacefully at her home.
She is survived by her husband, Francisco Gonzalez of Sugar Land, TX; her sister Carol Redding (Rafael Weston) of Alamosa, CO; brothers Chris Ortiz (Amy Mendez) of Longmont, CO, Mike Ortiz (Mickie) of Fort Collins, CO, and Mark Ortiz (Tandy) of Parker, CO; brothers-in-law Luis Alberto Gonzalez of Fremont, CA, Rafael Gonzalez (Marta Hernandez) of League City, TX, and Cesar Gonzalez of Torquemada, Spain; mother-in-law and father in-law Ana Maria Bustos and Prudencio Gonzalez of Torquemada, Spain; numerous nieces and nephews as well as other extended family; and her loving and faithful canine companion Elmo. Her parents, Anna Marie Ortiz and Cirilo "Beef" Ortiz preceded her in death.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Kathryn Ann Ortiz de Gonzalez's name to one of these Alamosa charities: The San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society, 76 El Rio Drive, Alamosa, CO 81101; or Tu Casa Inc., "Helping victims of domestic violence in the San Luis Valley", P. O. Box 473, Alamosa, CO 81101.
A funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 5. A committal service will follow in the Alamosa Cemetery.
