Obituary for Juanita Viola Wallace Turner

Alamosa – Juanita Viola Wallace Turner passed away October 27, 2014 at Evergreen Nursing Home in Alamosa. She had also been a resident of San Luis Care Center. Juanita and her sister Helen Crabtree moved to Alamosa in 1998 to be with Juanita’s daughter and granddaughter.
Juanita Viola Wallace was born March 6, 1923in Artesia, New Mexico, the third of five children of William and Pearl Adkins Wallace. The family later moved to Hot Springs, (now Truth or Consequences) New Mexico. Her parents, her sister Helen, and her three brothers, Willie, Glynn and Manuel preceded Juanita in death.
Juanita graduated from Hot Springs High School, where she was salutatorian and participated in band and the dance group “The Follies”. She married Billie C. Turner who died in 1992. They had two children, Mary Lee Turner Darnell and Joe E. Turner. Joe died in a plane crash in 1971. Juanita Turner is survived by her daughter Mary Lee Darnell of Alamosa, and three grandchildren: Marcia Darnell of New Mexico, Christopher Darnell of Arizona, and Andrew Darnell of Texas.
Juanita worked all of her adult life, assisting at the family store and tourist court, was a bookkeeper at a bank, and worked in the Sierra County New Mexico assessor’s office. She served two terms as the County Assessor before joining the county Social Services office. She rose to director and retired in 1985. She was active in the Hot Springs Rebekah Lodge and served as Noble Grand several times. She enjoyed reading and walking.
Cremation was selected and a Memorial may be held at a later date. The family suggests visits to the elderly and to the staffs at Evergreen Nursing Home and the San Luis Care Center. The family deeply appreciates the excellent care that Juanita received from the staffs of both nursing homes, but especially the staff at Evergreen, many of whom helped care for Juanita for all of her years in the Alzheimer’s unit. They are blessed caregivers.
