Obituary for Janice Elaine Coombs

Janice Elaine Coombs
Janice Elaine Tingley Coombs was born in Long Beach, California on September 8, 1943 to her Daddy and Mama, Chet and Mae Tingley. Two years later the family moved to Durango, Colorado and established their home. Janice’s childhood and youth were filled with love, family, hard work, and community involvement. She loved her older sister, Dolores “Dody” Tingley Ross, and her younger brother, Dale Howard Tingley, very much! She shared fun memories of square dancing, marching band, and working in the school and community libraries. Janice loved learning, reading, and being around others. Her humor and wit developed throughout her life and often manifested itself in loving nicknames, witticisms, colloquialisms, and Janice-isms. She loved to laugh and make others laugh. She was creative, tenacious, loving, and generous.

Janice earned her degree in Secondary Education, English and Math at Adams State College (ASC) in Alamosa, Colorado. While at ASC she met many friends, the best of whom is Janice Quiller Price. Janice and the “other” Janice maintained their friendship throughout their adulthood with many laughs, stories, and antics. She also met her husband of 54 years, Larry Coombs, at ASC. Together Janice and Larry raised 6 children, Rebekah Schofield (Jeff) of Farmington, NM; Tamara Coombs of Farmington, NM; Jason Coombs (Springe) of La Jara, CO; Barbara Ross (Redo) of Elizabeth, CO; Nathan Coombs (Charlotte) of Manassa, CO; and Alyson Coombs of Alamosa, CO.

Janice would say her greatest accomplishments were being the mother of her six children, being Larry’s wife, and her 20 years as an Early Morning Seminary Teacher in the La Jara Wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While being a Seminary teacher was by far her favorite calling, Janice loved serving in all of her callings in the Church, including serving in the Maryland, Baltimore Spanish Speaking Mission from 2007 to 2009 with her husband.

Janice was engaged in many different occupations as she helped provide for her family. However dealing Tupperware was what sticks out to most people and acquaintances. All of her children have fond and not-so-fond memories of being part of her Tupperware adventures. Janice was an avid reader and a lover of literature. Janice was tenacious in her commitment to be healthy and enjoyed the camaraderie of her work-out friends.

On October 25, 2018 Janice’s sister, parents, and parents-in-law (Warren and Edna Coombs) greeted her on the other side of veil. She is survived by her husband, Larry, her six children, 18 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, brother Dale (Lynn) of Durango, sisters-in-law Jolene Pavlovsky, Dory Washington, and Roberta Faucette, as well as her many nieces, nephews, and extended family members and her best friend of 57 years, Janice Quiller Price (Stanley).

A Visitation will be held at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa on Monday, October 29th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at the La Jara Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Tuesday morning from 9:30-10:30 in the Relief Society Room. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the La Jara Second Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow services in the Sanford Cemetery.
