Obituary for Hazel Maxine Metz

Saguache resident Hazel Maxine Metz, 88, passed away December 20, 2014 at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa.
Hazel was born in Ransom, Kansas the daughter of E. D. Beamer and Iona A. VanWinkle Beamer on January 24, 1926. Hazel married her first husband Clarence Metz, Jr. in 1948, he preceded her in death in 1958. She later married Harold L. “Pont” Freel and he preceded her in death in 1999. Knowing Jesus as her Savior, Hazel decided it was time to follow the Lord’s command and was baptized at the age of 68 at the Pitkin Avenue Baptist Church in Saguache, and she was very proud of this.
Hazel was a hard worker and worked for many years alongside her husband Clarence as a Beekeeper in Texas and Colorado. She also ran the Moffat Café for a time and worked as a Short-Order Cook and Waitress. Hazel supported Pont in his ranching endeavors for many years and enjoyed spending time driving about the ranch keeping track of their cows.
Her love was gardening and she had a green thumb. She loved to plant sweet peas and hollyhocks every year. In her younger years, she enjoyed music and dancing. Hazel was known to be a very sweet person and always had a good attitude. One of her greatest loves was her grandson Michael, with whom she was very proud.
She is survived by her daughter Lyn (Rick) Miles of Saguache; her step-children Bob (Bonnie) Freel of Tucson, AZ, Terry (Kathy) Freel of Moffat, Rod Freel of Belen, NM, Linda (David) Stagner of Moffat; her grandchild Michael (Laura Karnes) Pacheco; as well as numerous step-grandchildren including Kahra Barron, Kevin Miles and Eric Miles; her great-grandchildren Liliana Elizabeth Pacheco, Desiree Barron and Darci Barron; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her sisters Marjorie King and Doris Brubacher.
A Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 26, 2014 at the Rogers Family Mortuary, 404 Morris St., in Monte Vista. Interment will follow services in the Monte Vista Cemetery.
