Obituary for Harley Grant Gilleland

Harley Grant Gilleland passed away in his home August 5, 2016 with his loving wife of 63 years by his
side.

Harley was born April 26, 1933 to John Vernal Gilleland and Leona Delores Parker Gilleland in Manassa,
Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers Marvin Gilleland & John Thomas
(Tom) Gilleland and his granddaughter Tia Lee King Murtaugh. Harley is survived by his wife Janice
Huffaker Gilleland, five children, Terri (Greg) King of Manassa, Grant (Tammy) Gilleland of Phippsburg,
Colorado, Patty (Mike) Creel of Sanford, Brenda Gilleland Edgar of Sanford , and Brent (Kim) Gilleland of
Manassa, 18 grandchildren, 47 great‐grandchildren, and his sisters, Genial (Jack) Ray of Carson City,
Nevada, Nancy (Tim) Timmerman of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Carla (James) Shawcroft of Manassa
and sister‐in‐law, Eunice (Tom) Gilleland of Manassa.

Harley was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‐day Saints. He married his
sweetheart in the Manti, Utah temple for time and all eternity on July 27, 1953.

He never found anything broken that he couldn’t fix or a mess he couldn’t straighten out. He built four
homes with a master carpenter’s precision, all in his spare time. He was a perfectionist in all that he did,
as demonstrated by his beautiful yard and roses.

Harley served in the United States Navy as a medic during the 1950’s and was stationed in San Diego,
California. In 1966 he was interim‐mayor of Manassa when the Jack Dempsey museum was dedicated.
Jack Dempsey stayed with Harley and Janice while visiting Manassa. With Dempsey perhaps being the
only exception, his family regarded Harley as the toughest and hardest working guy they ever knew.
Harley worked as a conductor for the railroad for 44 years
.
He loved spending time in the mountains, especially the moments spent there with his beloved family.
He was an avid hunter, snowmobiler and motorcycle rider and could be found doing those activities into
his 80th year of life. He will be loved and missed by many.

A viewing will be held at the Manassa LDS Church on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:45 AM, followed by a
graveside service at the Manassa Cemetery at 11AM.
