Obituary for Elaine M. Southway

Elaine Marrian Kuehl Southway, 98 years old, was born to William and Albertena Kuehl in Wilcox, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on September 4, 1916. The family, her father, mother, and three sisters and a brother left Canada when Elaine was three years old. After coming to the United States, the family moved frequently and finally settled in Parkdale, Colorado. There, Elaine met Henry Southway. They were married in 1937. To this union was born two children; Joanne and Henry Jr. “Butch”.
Elaine and Henry moved to the valley in 1948 from Littleton, Colorado, and lived in the tallest house in Blanca until 1963 when they moved to Alamosa.
Elaine was a devoted wife, homemaker, and mother and enjoyed her grandchildren very much. She bowled, golfed, and was an avid bridge player. She was competitive and strong willed. She served on the local election board for a number of years. After the death of her husband in 1988, she worked as a Grey Lady at the hospital for 17 years.
The last seven years of her life were spent in her apartment at the Bridge with her constant companion Precious, her beloved white cat. She loved people at the Bridge and enjoyed her time there playing cards, and working jig-saw puzzles.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry Southway, her son-in-law Myron Clayton her grandson Michael Clayton, great-grandson Taylor Clayton. Her three sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by her children, JoAnne (Myron) Clayton and Henry T. “Butch” (Izora) Southway both of Alamosa, her grandchildren: Bev (Michael) Morgan, Steve (Kathy) Clayton, Rocky (Trinette) Southway, Clay Southway and granddaughter-in-law Susan Clayton as well as 9 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday December 31, 2014 at the Living Water Bible Fellowship in Alamosa. Burial will follow services in the Alamosa cemetery. Contributions are suggested to the Elaine Southway Scholarship fund for Adams State University and made in care of the funeral home.
