Longtime valley resident Edith Grace Stephens, 84, passed away on June 26, 2018. She was born on July 27, 1933 in Fort Garland, Colorado to Hubert and Ethel Henderson John. She was employed by the Alamosa School District as a cook for 29 years. She loved her job and loved her interaction with the children. She truly enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, camping and especially spending time with her family. She had a large collection of Cabbage Patch dolls and frogs that she treasured. She enjoyed her time at the Rio Grande Inn in La Jara, getting to help cook and work in the garden.

She is survived by her children, Edward (Bonnie) Gylling of Alamosa, Byron Gylling of Pueblo and Beverly Fowler of Alamosa, her grandchildren, Josh McKnight, Sarah Snow, Nicholas Gylling, Shane Gylling, Jessica Quinones, Jeremy Fowler, Jesse Fowler and Dolene Rodman as well as twelve great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and her family at the Rio Grande Inn.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James Stephens, her brothers, Paul John, Elmer John, Carl John and Edward John and her sisters, Lila Rippeto, Alzera Gunter, Louise Carrell, Ida Canales and Verna Cordova.

Cremation was selected and a Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday July 7, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Alamosa. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Valley Humane League and may be made in care of the funeral home office.
