Obituary for Calvin Ray "Bud" Sheeley

Bud passed away at his home near Alamosa on Friday, July 10, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was born in Alamosa, Colorado on September 27, 1937 to Hugh and Grace (Ray) Sheeley. After graduating from Alamosa High School, Bud enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Airman and was an Aviation Electronics Technician. He was stationed in Twakuoni, Japan for two years. Bud grew to love it there and really enjoyed his time in the military.

Bud married Janis Carter in Alamosa and he worked with his father at Palace of Fruit. They had four children. He had a contract with the U.S. Postal Service in Leadville while building his first restaurant The Hungry Miner. Bud also attended and graduated from Colorado Mountain College with a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics. Following his and Janis’ divorce, he sold the restaurant and returned home to Alamosa. Bud then purchased Kings Restaurant in East Alamosa. He built and operated the La Sahara for several years, this is where he met and fell in love with Virgie (Fidler). They married and had two daughters. During the early years, Bud and Virgie built Dairy Island and ran that restaurant for a few years. He then set his sights on remodeling the La Sahara property. Bud built True Grits Steakhouse and operated this for 25 years, this April 8, 2015. Bud also purchased Discount Liquor from his family’s estate about 15 years ago. He sold the liquor store and retired May 1, 2014.

He is survived by his wife Virgie of the family home, his children Buddy Ray Sheeley of Greeley, CO, Wayten (Robin) Sheeley of Evans, CO, Callene Williamson of Greeley, Co, Brandi Sheeley of Alamosa, Sheri Sheeley of Alamosa; his sisters Kally Sheeley of Alamosa, Judy (Keith) Davis of Riverside, CA.

He is preceded in death by one son Milton Ray Sheeley, two sisters Jollene Kennec, and Marlene Fallis, both parents Hugh and Grace Sheeley and best friends Romo, Cash and Sonny Sheeley.

A Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday, July 15th at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. A Funeral Service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2015 at the First Christian Church, 518 First Street in Alamosa. Interment will follow services in the Monte Vista Cemetery.
