Obituary for Arlon Leroy Sawyer

Arlon Leroy Sawyer
Arlon L. Sawyer peacefully passed away in Monte Vista under the care of Hospice on June 7, 2016. Arlon was born on March 5, 1929 at the home ranch in a little town named Keene, KS, the son of Leroy and Flora I. (Wyllie) Sawyer.

He moved to the San Luis Valley with his family in 1936 when he was 7 years old from Maple Hill, KS. He was a loving father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Farming and ranching was his life. He was a hard worker raising potatoes, grain, alfalfa, cattle, sheep and pigs. He lived in Del Norte, CO until the age of 13. Then moved to Swede Lane, Monte Vista, CO to the age of 40. During the years he farmed and ranched, he worked various part-time jobs; Sunrise Creamery, Gunbarrel Liquors, Enco Station and custom windrowing and swathing. He sold the farm/ranch in December, 1969 and worked for Mountfort Wholesale for 21 years.

His favorite pass time was taking rides all around the Valley to reminisce and tell his stories about his experiences growing up. He had many wonderful stories about the Valley and the people he came to know through the years. Everyone loved to sit with him listening and sharing these stories. He served on the Monte Vista Cemetery Board from 2000 to 2008 and continued to volunteer his time several years thereafter. He had a deep passion and love for the cemetery and started a major project to improve and restore the cemetery grounds. He was a member of the Monte Vista United Methodist Church.

Arlon is survived by this daughters, RaNa (Dennis) Dunkerson, Colette (Ray) Skeff, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and Special Friend, Karen Sawyer.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Flora I. Sawyer, three brothers, Marvin E. Sawyer, Ronald O. Sawyer and Chester (Stillborn) and two sisters, Erma Arlene (Sawyer) Carson and Laura (Stillborn) and a Sister-in-Law, Yvonne Sawyer.
