Obituary for Abram J. "Abe" Relyea

Longtime Alamosa resident Abram “Abe” J Relyea, 91, passed away June 26, 2014 at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa surrounded by his family.
Abe was born in Guilderland, New York to Abram and Edith Howenstein Relyea. He married Barbara Lilly on July 8, 1950 in Guilderland, New York and they would enjoy the next 63 years together.
Abe was in boy scouts as a young man. He attended schools at Cornell University in New York and received his Master’s degree in Agronomy from Michigan State. Abe worked for the Extension Service in both New York and Colorado, assisting many farmers and ranchers with solving agronomic issues. In his earlier years, Abe volunteered for 4-H and was instrumental in the success of the Chicken BBQ as the Chief Cook. He was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He also liked to play golf, card games including bridge and pinochle, and was active in the First United Methodist Church of Alamosa.
Abe is survived by his wife Barbara Relyea of Alamosa; his children Jim (Yvon Boss) Relyea of Alamosa, Sandra Relyea of Redding, CA, Linda (Chris Medina) Relyea of Alamosa and Scott Relyea of Big Fork, MT; his grandchildren Sarah (Adrian) Ramirez, Matt (Sarah) Relyea, Sean Grady, Joshua Medina and Dale Relyea; four great-grandchildren Adrian, Ashley, Aden and Aaron Ramirez; sisters Edith Dylong of Myrtle Beach, SC and Emma White of Albany, NY; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
His parents, his brother Robert Relyea, his sisters Margaret Empie and Carrie Schell; his brother-in-law John Lilly and his sister-in-law Dorothy Lilly all preceded him in death.
A Memorial Service will be held 10 a.m Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Alamosa. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to either the First United Methodist Church or to Children’s Hospital in his memory and may be made in care of the funeral home office at 205 State Ave., Alamosa, CO 81101.
