I worked with Helen back in the 1970's when she was the municipal judge in Alamosa and I was the Municipal court clerk. I learned so much from her. As a young woman just out of college, I was impatient and quick to judge. Helen was the opposite and was always so thoughtful about her decisions regarding defendants and I was able to learn much from her. I recall once when an elderly man was in an accident. It was his first moving violation EVER and he was saddened by that fact. As a foolish youngster I felt he was a danger on the road and all I could see was that he needed to be removed from the road. Helen was so compassionate and mulled over the situaton for several days. She did not want to take away his license, but also realized it was probably necessary. She explained to me that by taking away an elderly persons driving privileges, you are in reality taking away their last freedom and independence. Thankfully I saw her wisdom and have come to appreciate her thoughtful approach to life. I have since adopted many of her traits in dealing with people, especially the elderly and am no longer so quick to judge. She was truly a remarkable woman that taught me much and I was blessed to have worked with her.
