December 23, 1933 – January 28, 2024
Manassa- William King Jr.
William "Bill" Parnell King Jr., a revered community member, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2024, in La Jara, Colorado. He was born on December 23, 1933, in Manassa, Colorado, to a family that would grow to admire and respect the man he would become. William's legacy is one of enduring love and steadfast dedication to his family and community.
William's journey began in Manassa, where he formed the values that would guide him throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of Manassa High School, where he excelled. His heart found its match in Mary Helen Sutherland, his teenage sweetheart. Their love blossomed into a marriage that stood the test of time for over 70 years, a testament to their unwavering commitment to each other.
Together, William and Mary Helen built a beautiful family, blessing the world with their children: Raymond King of Salt Lake City, UT; Leonard (Krysten) King of Belen, NM; Sheri King Horton (Joseph) of Manassa, CO; and Kristen (Keith) Moorman of Hemet, CA. His family grew to include 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. William was preceded in death by his daughter Shelia Marie King, his granddaughter Ashley King, all of his siblings, and his great-grandson Taj Cornum.
Professionally, William was nationally known as "The Turquoise King," a moniker that spoke to his expertise and the legacy he upheld in the turquoise mining industry. His pride and joy, Kings Lick Skillet Mine and Kings Manassa Green, had been part of the King family since 1894. As the fourth generation to operate the mine, William was instrumental in ensuring its success and continuity, with the legacy now extending to the seventh generation. His commitment to providing for his family was unwavering, and he took great pride in ensuring they had everything they needed.
William's impact extended beyond his professional achievements. He served in branch presidency in Los Lunas, NM, and served in the Bishopric in Manassa, roles that allowed him to express his deep faith and commitment to service. His dedication to education and the well-being of future generations was evident in his involvement with the North Conejos School District, where he contributed his wisdom and guidance.
Family was the cornerstone of William's life. He cherished the time spent with loved ones, especially during family activities and cookouts at the river. These moments were filled with laughter, love, and the creation of memories that his family will hold dear forever.
