Obituary

On March 26, 2023 Sue Ellen Englert, daughter of Dr. William A. Liggett and Dora Louise Fulton Liggett, beloved wife of Thad Englert, sister to Bill, Celine, and Robin and friend of many passed away at the family ranch at the age of 82.

Sue was born in Denver, Colorado on September 14, 1940. She graduated from Cherry Creek High School, then attended the University of Colorado Boulder where she developed a very keen interest in music, education, and service, leading to travels in Mexico volunteering to help the citizens of local communities. Upon returning to the states, she took a position at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale, Colorado as a science teacher while furthering her education in science, math and arts at the Colorado Mountain College and Loretta Heights College. It was at Colorado Mountain College she first met her future husband Thad as they worked together on a Physics publication "The Ghost Flute". For her work on this project and her other academic and service endeavors Sue was named for inclusion in the 1976 edition of "Outstanding Young Women in America".

Her passion for physics led her through the rigorous academic process to attain a doctorate from the University of Wyoming in 1986. During her graduate school experience, she also began life's adventures with her beloved late husband of 40 years, Thad when they were married on August 11, 1979. They found great joy in hunting, fishing, ranching, roughing it, playing bluegrass music, and expanded horizons generally living life to its fullest in the vast windy plains of southern Wyoming and Laramie. Not for a lack of things and adventures to keep them busy, Thad and Sue each learned to fly a Cessna airplane and later purchased one of their own. During their "frontier" experience they notably served in the professoriate of the Engineering Department at the University of Wyoming. They were in the purest sense, authentic, genuine and grounded academics.

After a few years they expanded their horizons and moved to New Mexico, conducting research at Kirkland Air Force Base, and extending their ranching desires by trading their airplane for their first small herd of cattle for their small ranch outside of Estancia, New Mexico. After retiring completely from the academic scene they bought a ranch in the San Luis Valley where they could pursue their passion for ranching, serving the locals and playing music full time. Thad and Sue lived out their days simply and genuinely on the "L backward E" Ranch.

Sue will be remembered for her excellence as an academic, teacher and musician; she will be very missed as a friend and mother. She is survived by her brother and sister, her children Mark (Janine), Cathy (Brit), Lori (Bill), Lois (Greg), Heather (Michael), and Eric, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her faithful dog, Olie.

Cremation was chosen and a service will be held at a later date.
