Zanski
August 8, 1932 – March 25, 2026
Shirley Ann (Higel) Zanski, 93, Alamosa, went to her heavenly home March 25,2026 surrounded by family at San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center.
Shirley was the 5th child Born to Herman and Elsie Higel in Alamosa, August 8 1932, growing up on the Higel Ranch and attending Mt. Pleasant School. She met the love of her life Joe Zanski in 1951, wed in 1952 and spent the next 73 years with Joe as partners, best friends and confidants.
Together they built a family of seven children, and created a lasting legacy in Alamosa.
Shirley was a long-time employee of Alamosa School district, touching the lives of hundreds of students as a teacher's aide and library aide for 30 years at Ortega Middle School.
Shirley was often seen at Alamosa High School events supporting her children in their endeavors in Band, Cheerleading and Athletics.
Later, Shirley was an avid supporter of Adams State College athletics, either attending or listening to games on the radio.
She loved her Wednesday bridge group, working in her beloved yard and cooking for family and friends. She was also a longtime member of Cattails Golf Course.
Shirley is preceded in death by grandsons BJ Hughes, Joshua Mcknight, grandson in law Daren Coleman, her parents and siblings, Jeri Bade, Harold Higel, Richard Higel and Ruthie Wagner.
She is survived by her children Susan (Don) Dube', Lorraine (Jim) McKnight, Beverly (Brian) Hundertmark, Claudia (Larry) Rossman, Mick (Beth) Zanski, Mary Ann (Bob) Hughes and Andy (Susan) Zanski. As well as siblings Margaret Farron, Patty Knapp, Tommy Higel and Helen Carr.
She was a proud grandparent of 18 as well as 26 great grandchildren.
Cremation was performed at the Rogers Family Mortuary Crematory and there will be a Memorial Mass on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa followed by inurnment in the Alamosa Cemetery.
