Obituary

Shirley Rae Barr born on March 16, 1948 in Alamosa, CO to Eugene Barr and Gladys Barr (Westbrook). Shirley was the seventh of thirteen children. She attended school in Sanford and graduated from Sanford High School in 1966. In high school, Shirley was voted Ms. Personality an Ms. Scholarship. She was kind and treated everyone equally by valuing the person and not the image. She earned a Bachelors degrees in Biology and Business from Adams St College in 1970. She was sealed to Gerald Craig Valentine in the Mesa Arizona temple on June 9, 1970. They lived in Sanford, Broomfield and Canyon City, CO before settling in Aurora, CO where they raised their family of two children, Kiechel and Britney.

She served diligently in numerous callings over the years in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In the Sanford Ward as a Junior Sunday School Teacher and Dance Instructor. She was a natural dancer and learned all of the popular steps and moves. She then taught the dances to the youth of the church. She served in Primary and the Nursery in Broomfield. In the Aurora 1st ward, serving in the Primary, Young Women and Relief Society Presidencies, and she also taught the 6-year olds in primary for 15 consecutive years. She would spend hours each week preparing her Primary lessons. She loved creating handouts for the children to take home that helped teach gospel principles. She especially loved serving with Sally Westover in the Young Women Organization, planning activities and mentoring them. "Serving in the church is always better when it is with a good friend." She also served as the bishop's wife, supporting him in his numerous responsibilities and donating her garage as storage space for some ward related endeavor.

later served a service mission at the Denver Bishop's storehouse for more than 3 years.

Shirley was a prolific letter writer. She wrote Craig a letter in Central America every week for the rest of his mission, after the untimely death of his mother, Doris in 1968. She wrote Kiechel a letter every day of his mission in Alabama. She put a letter in the mailbox to Alabama on the day he completed his mission that would then need to be forwarded back to Denver. When she died, she had a large stack of birthday cards addressed and stamped ready to go out for April birthdays of friends and family.

She was the biggest Broncos fan on either side of the family, never missed watching a game and often times had to wake Craig up to come watch with her.

She loved decorating her home for every holiday in the year: Valentine's Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, with the expertise of an interior decorator. She loved the Christmas season, both for the spiritual significance and the excitement of her friends and family for the joyous season.

She planned a family vacation each summer, carefully managing the family finances all year long. They visited 42 states, Canada and Mexico. She loved seeing as much of the USA as was possible, documenting it all through timeless photos stored in family albums.

Her most joyous moment, was in 1982 when the family flew to Salt Lake City to go to the Salt Lake temple and have new baby Britney sealed to the family, as an eternal family, for time and eternity. It was the pinnacle of her gospel centered life.

Craig and Shirley moved to Parker, CO in 2020 after 44 years at 418 S Lima Circle in Aurora. She loved her new home and the opportunities this new setting presented. She died peacefully in her home in Parker on April 9, 2026.
