Shirley Lou Carbutt Paine was born February 3, 1935 in Chama, New Mexico to Robert O. Carbutt and Lucy DePriest. She departed this world May 24, 2023. She was the oldest of four children.

Shirley was married to Thomas Almy Paine on December 3, 1952 in Manassa, Colorado. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Arizona temple on August 10, 1965. They were the parents of seven children, Frank Paine, Lou Ann (Randy) Robins, Joan (Kurt) Cary, Roberta (Gary) Morgan, Pam (Kip) Canty, Lucy Palmer and Jim (Natalie) Paine. Their posterity includes 34 grandchildren, 87 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Frank, grandsons Joshua Cary and Ethan Canty and brother Richard Carbutt.

Shirley taught fourth grade in Manassa for one year and third grade in Sanford for 26 years. She loved teaching and was dedicated to her students.

She was a wonderful gardener and always grew a huge garden. She loved to work with the cows, irrigate, spray weeds (while riding the four-wheeler) and anything else that needed to be done on the ranch. She was definitely the hardest working woman around.

Shirley enjoyed embroidering and made tablecloths for all her daughters, daughter-in-law, granddaughters and granddaughter-in law. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress and loved playing the piano. Shirley was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had many callings in the church and always fulfilled them to the best of her ability.

Shirley is survived by her sister Ann (Jim) Braiden, brother Ray Carbutt, her six children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was always concerned for the welfare of others and was so kind. She will be missed by so many.
