Shamaan Ochaum Climbing Eagle 79, returned to the Light on March 19, 2021. A brilliant and multi-talented person, she was a Naturopath, Native American Medicine Woman, spiritual leader, visionary, teacher. Astrologer, artist, TV and radio producer and host, as well as a gymnast, poet, writer and musician. She was a Rainbow Warrior who was passionately engaged in her commitment to supporting better life for all.
Of Native American, African American and European heritage, she was Rainbow Bridge. She attended UC Berkley, Humboldt State University and the San Francisco Art Institute, but her interests were many and her knowledge deep. Shamaan was a true Renaissance Woman. As a young woman, she trained as a gymnast, and later toured internationally as a drummer. Music was one of her mediums of expression and she never stopped learning, especially the rhythms, songs and traditions of other cultures. Drums and Native American Flute were among instruments in which she was proficient. She loved Art and enjoyed painting in oil and acrylic on canvas, drums and hide as well as pencil and line drawing – making her living as a portrait artist while in school. Nature, animals and plants fascinated her. She learned the healing ways of herbs and other natural methods to become a Naturopath. She followed the Native American Good Red Road, leading vision quests for groups and individuals, including quests to Hawaii and Bandelier Stone Lion Shrine. Her love of travel brought her to many places including Italy, New York City, Mexico, Hawaii and to her surprise Austin, TX. She taught dream analysis, astrology and herbal medicine. Known for her kind heart, she rescued animals, and was a loyal and valued friend. She touched people's hearts in a deep, meaningful way so that many of her students and the people she encountered became lifelong friends and family. She cared passionately for the environment and had a deep connection with Mother Earth, working to heal Her with Sacred Ceremony and activities such as growing milkweed in her yard to attract, raise, and then release endangered Monarch butterflies. Her beautiful smile and infectious laugh came out when dancing, playing wild games of Pictionary, or raising a glass of fine wine or single malt scotch with friends in celebration of life and family. She has gone on to the next stage of her journey, but will always remain in the hearts and memories of those of us who loved her. She is survived by her spouse of 35 years Donna, her daughter Andrea and her sister Leslie, as well as a broad circle of family and friends who all miss her deeply.
