Obituary

Richard John Van Wagenen, born on April 5, 1940, in Denver, Colorado, passed away on March 24, 2026, in Alamosa, Colorado, leaving behind a life marked by gentleness, creativity, and adventure.

He was born to the late Leonard Everett Van Wagenen and Elizabeth Ruth Brohard Van Wagenen, and he carried the values of family, loyalty, and quiet strength throughout his life. He was also preceded in death by his son, Bryan Sanford, and by his siblings, Gary Van Wagenen, Pamela Jean Casillas, and Margaret Bowman.

Richard earned his Bachelor's degree in Business and later became a Certified Public Accountant, building a career grounded in discipline, intelligence, and integrity. He was respected for his thoughtful nature and his ability to approach life with both practicality and imagination. Those who knew him appreciated his presence and the gentle way he carried himself, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, and was discharged in 1961.

An avid runner, Richard found joy and purpose in the running community. He served as President of the Rocky Mountain Road Runners, the organization that helps organize the annual Bolder Boulder run, and he took great pride in being part of that tradition. He also volunteered for seventeen years with the Bicycle Tour of Colorado, giving his time and energy to an event that reflected his love of movement, endurance, and community spirit. His commitment to these activities spoke to his adventurous nature and his willingness to serve others.

Richard also enjoyed the world of automobiles and was a proud member of the Woodie Automobile Club. He had a car that he showed at many car shows for the Wavecrest Surf Club, where his enthusiasm and appreciation for craftsmanship were evident. These interests reflected his creative side and his enjoyment of sharing experiences with others who valued history, style, and the open road.

In his later years, Richard found a special home in the Del Norte area, where he embraced the beauty and peace of the region. He was a cherished member of the Del Norte Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. He especially had a soft spot for his dogs, who brought him comfort and companionship and were a cherished part of his daily life. His love for animals was one more reflection of his tender heart and his capacity for affection.

He is survived by his niece, Laura Van Wagenen of Lakewood, Colorado, and Danien Van Wagenen Jimenez of San Diego, CA; his sister-in-law, Marilyn Van Wagenen of Lakewood, Colorado; his nieces and nephews, Mitchell "Mark" Mettam of Denver, Colorado, Shannon Galligan-Kennedy of Peoria, Arizona, and Patrick Galligan; as well as numerous church and community friends who will remember him with affection and respect.

Cremation was chosen and a Graveside Service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2026 at the Del Norte Cemetery.
