Richard Dean Smith, a devoted family man and respected veteran, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, at the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte, Colorado. Born in Barberton, Ohio, on February 25, 1940, Richard's journey through life was marked by an unwavering sense of duty and a compassionate heart.

Richard's legacy is carried forward by his adoring wife of 64 years, Susan Smith. They were high school sweethearts from a small town that struck out and enjoyed travelling the world together. Their bond was further enriched by the joy of raising their children Kimberlee and husband John Dinn of Kensington, Maryland, and Careena and husband James Oberrik of Monte Vista, Colorado. The light of his life continued to shine brightly through the eyes of his four grandchildren (Griffin, Jameson, Hayden and Jackson), extended family, and friends.

In his dedication of 30 years of service to the United States Army, Richard earned a bronze star and retired with honors. He continued his commitment to excellence through various positions, most recently at N.O.R.A.D. in Colorado Springs. His commitment to his country was matched only by his dedication to his community. As a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge #73 A.F. and A.M. in Monte Vista and the Al Kaly Shriners, he exemplified a spirit of brotherhood and charitable work.

Richard's passion for mechanics and craftsmanship was evident to those who knew him well. He found joy in working alongside his grandchildren, teaching them the art of rebuilding motors and sharing his woodworking skills. He had a love for being in the outdoors and passed this passion to his children and grandchildren – who can often be found romping through the woods by foot, bike or ATV. Intelligent, courageous, and gentle are words that only begin to describe Richard, whose guiding principles shone through in every endeavor he undertook.
