Obituary

Philomena Lucinda "Mena" Romero (née Salazar), age 96, passed away peacefully at her home on July 28, 2025, in her hometown of Antonito, Colorado. Born on May 7, 1929, also in Antonito, she spent nearly a century rooted in the community that shaped her and which she, in turn, helped shape through a life of quiet strength and enduring love.

Born into a world on the brink of the Great Depression, Philomena's life was marked by resilience and grace. She weathered life's many storms with courage and dignity, always guided by an unwavering spirit and deep faith. Her journey was one of perseverance and purpose—a testament to the power of love, family, and devotion.

A devoted homemaker throughout her life, Philomena found joy and meaning in caring for her home and those around her. Her kitchen affectionately known as "Mena's Kitchen"—was the heart of her household. It was there that she expressed her love through food, preparing meals that nourished not only the body, but also the soul. The warmth of her cooking brought people together across generations; it was in these shared moments that memories were made and bonds were strengthened.

Philomena's spirituality was a cornerstone of her life. A woman of deep faith, she held her beliefs close to her heart and lived them daily through acts of kindness, patience, and compassion. Her gentle presence offered comfort to many, and her steadfast devotion served as an example to all who knew her.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Doreen, sons Wilmer and Mark, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews whose lives she touched deeply. Her legacy lives on in each of them—in their traditions, their values, and their memories of time spent with a woman whose nurturing spirit left an indelible mark.

Philomena's life was a lesson in grace—grace under pressure, grace in giving without expectation, grace in loving unconditionally. Though she has departed this world, the echoes of her laughter from "Mena's Kitchen," the warmth of her embrace, and the strength of her faith will continue to inspire those who carry forward her memory. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Frank L. Romero, her parents Delfido and Gertrude Salazar, and her siblings.

May Philomena Lucinda "Mena" Romero be remembered with love and gratitude by all who had the privilege to know her. May her memory bring comfort to those who mourn her passing.
