Peter Sargent Middlemist, a longtime rancher and respected member of the San Luis Valley community, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, at the age of 92.
Peter was born on June 12, 1934, to the late Pete Middlemist Sr. and Mercedes Sargent. He was a former resident of Antonito, Colorado, and had made his home in Alamosa, Colorado, for many years.
Following high school, Peter attended the University of Colorado for two years, where he proudly played football for the Colorado Buffaloes. He later Honorably served his country in the United States Army for two years while stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs.
A lifelong rancher, Peter dedicated his life to agriculture and was a proud advocate for the ranching community. He served as the president of the San Luis Valley Cattlemen’s Association, where he worked alongside fellow ranchers to support the livestock industry throughout the valley.
On June 12, 1956, Peter married the love of his life, Linda Jean Ensign, in Lakewood, Colorado. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and the values of hard work and dedication.
Peter had a passion for sports and was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos, University of Colorado football, and the Colorado Rockies. He found great joy in ranch life, spending countless hours watching sheep and cattle, riding his beloved horse, Hoss, and most importantly, spending time with his family.
Peter is survived by his children, Mark (Jan) Middlemist, Marsha (Ron) Cash, and Robert (Krista) Middlemist; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Jean Middlemist; his parents, Pete Middlemist Sr. and Mercedes Sargent; his sister, Jacqueline Beaton; his brother, Andy Middlemist; and his great-great-grandchild, Chandler Rose Kirkpatrick.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Conejos, Colorado. Burial will follow at San Luis Valley Cemetery in Monte Vista, Colorado.
Peter will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his lifelong commitment to ranching, his devotion to his community, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind in the San Luis Valley.
