Merlee L. Montoya, 86, of Center, Colorado, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026. She was born on April 10, 1940, in Center, Colorado, and was a lifelong resident of the community she loved.

Merlee dedicated many years of her life to serving the children and families of Center through her work as a lunch lady for Center Schools. She later retired from Cannon Potato after many years of employment.

Merlee found joy in the simple things in life, especially taking car rides, spending time with her family, and making memories with her grandchildren. She was a devoted member of Saint Jerome’s Catholic Church in Center, where her faith was an important part of her life.

Merlee is survived by her son, Larry Torrez; her daughter, Maryann Martinez; her siblings, Christine Cale, Maryann Mondragon, Delores Gallegos, Angie Vigil, Joe Vigil, and Johnnie Vigil; her grandchildren, Shauna Valdez, Kyle Torrez, and Dylan Torrez; and her great-grandchild, Ursula Torrez.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Aldoro Vigil and Estella Lovato; her siblings, Ruth Archuleta, Elizabeth Avila, Cecil Rivera, Raymond Vigil, Walter Vigil, and Tommy Vigil; and her grandson, Justin James Torrez.

Merlee will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her faith, and the many years she spent as a part of the Center community. She leaves behind cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of her family and all who knew and loved her.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Saint Jerome’s Catholic Church in Center, Colorado.

Interment will follow at Homelake Cemetery in Monte Vista, Colorado.
