Matt Douglas
Bushnell
September 26, 1968 – December 31, 2024
Matt Douglas Bushnell passed away at age 56 on December 31, 2024 at his home in Mesa Arizona. He was born September 26, 1968 in Denver, Colorado and raised in Durango by Donald and Elizabeth Bushnell.
Matt was an outstanding baseball player at Durango High School and in summer league Babe Ruth. He received baseball scholarships to Denver Metro and Snow College in Ephraim, UT. For a season of his life, he enjoyed racing four-cylinder cars, called "4 Bangers" at Lake Geneva Raceway in Wisconsin.
His career was in the real estate title industry, working for Chicago Title in Illinois and Stewart Title in Durango. In declining health the past few years, he turned a lifetime love of sports into a creative endeavor in youth sports photography.
Matt's greatest role in life was that of Dad. Proud father to Austin Dale and Brodey, and stepfather to Christian, Bryannah, Austin Lucas, Maggy and Marcus. He was patient and calm and worked hard to provide for his family. When Austin Dale was little, Matt loved spending time with him in the evenings, watching fireflies from the porch of their home in suburban Chicago. Later, his pride and joy was Brodey, and Matt made sacrifices of comfort in ill health to travel widely with Brodey's competitive soccer team.
Matt's health was impacted by diabetes, and he had a leg amputation in 2017. Over the last few years his health had declined and hospitalization was frequent. He remained as active as possible in his family's life.
Matt is survived by his wife Erin, by his children, their partners and spouses, and six grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Scott Bushnell, and sisters Jennifer Innocenzi and Kristen Phillips, by their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two half sisters and his biological father.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matt's name to the National Kidney Foundation or Mayo Clinic.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Sanford. Burial will follow the service in the Sanford Cemetery.
