Obituary

Mary R. Rodriguez, a beacon of love and generosity, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born on November 2, 1946, in Del Agua, Colorado, to her adoring parents, Fernando and Josephine Martinez Gomez, Mary was one of twenty-one cherished siblings. Throughout her life, her kind and loving spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Raised in a bustling and lively household, Mary learned the virtues of family and compassion early on. Though she mourned the loss of her parents and five siblings, Fernando Jr., Edward, Betty, Gloria, and Alice, Mary's heart remained vast and full of love. She carried this love with her when she married her devoted husband, Manuel L. Rodriguez, on September 13, 1965, in Taos, New Mexico. Their bond was a testament to enduring partnership, with Manuel continuing to reside in their family home in Alamosa.

The proud mother to Rita Rodriguez and Rick Rodriguez (married to Leticia), Mary's joy further blossomed with the arrival of her grandchildren, Marylou (Tyler) Berg, Derek Rodriguez, and Olivia Rodriguez, and her great-granddaughter, Lexi Berg. Her grand and great-grandchildren were the apple of her eye, and she devoted herself fully to their happiness and well-being. She is also survived by her siblings: Jerry (Christine) Martinez of Colorado Springs, Pete Gomez of Denver, Gene (Rose) Gomez of Wilcox, AZ, Larry (Debbie) Gomez of Fort Garland, Bobby Gomez of Denver, Gilbert Gomez of Eloy, AZ, Manuel (Charity) Gomez of Ft. Garland, Barbara Sandoval of Pueblo, Margie Maestas of Ft. Garland, Christine (Steve) Martinez of Denver, Rose Marquez of Monte Vista, Darlene (Benito) Jiminez of Ft. Garland, Patricia (Doro) Archuleta of Denver, CO, Louise (Blas) Perales of Casa Grande, AZ, and Linda Belloc of Eloy, AZ.

Mary's nurturing nature extended beyond her own kin. She was known in her neighborhood as a surrogate grandmother to many, shaping the lives of three generations of children. Furthermore, she served as a godmother to eight other children, always standing by them with unwavering support and guidance.

With a career spanning over 38 years at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa, Mary's professional life as a Housekeeping Supervisor was marked by diligence and care. Her work ethic was as much a part of her as her famous tortillas and chili—which were not only staples at family gatherings but also beloved by all who had the pleasure of tasting them.

Above her culinary talents, Mary's passion for life radiated through her interests. She remained engaged with her loved ones and the world through Facebook, cherished the challenges of word searches, and was celebrated for her unwavering support of her children's and grandchildren's endeavors.

Described best as loving, kind, and generous, Mary's presence was a light that never dimmed. Her legacy continues through the lives of her surviving husband, children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends—each of whom carry a piece of her nurturing spirit and boundless kindness. Mary will always be remembered for the warmth and care she bestowed upon the world, embodying what it truly means to lead a life filled with love.

Cremation was chosen, and a Recitation of the Rosary will be held 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 25th, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2026, both at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Alamosa.
