Obituary

Lonnie Lee Smith, 91, a cherished soul and beloved patriarch, passed away peacefully at his home in Blanca, Colorado, on November 23, 2024. Born on January 1, 1933, in Kentucky to Charles and Ethel (Littrell) Smith. Lonnie's life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and the love of his family.

Lonnie's journey began in the rolling hills of Kentucky, where he developed a passion for mechanics and all things mechanical. This passion led him to a fulfilling career as a self-employed mechanic, a trade that not only supported his family but also allowed him to touch the lives of many in his community with his skillful hands and generous heart. Lonnie served his country in the United States Army and served in the Korean war.

He married the love of his life, Alice, and together built a family that was his pride and joy. Lonnie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice Smith; his daughters Barbara (David) Scriven of Lamar, CO, Peggy Smith of Blanca, CO, and Amber Smith of Brooking, SD; his son Greg Smith of Atlanta, GA; his grandchildren, Zachary, Paula, Jessica, Jennifer, Gregory Paul and several great grandchildren; his brother Glen Smith; and his sisters Evelyn Gooch and Frances Taylor, along with brother-in-law Benny Robertson, all of Kentucky. Lonnie also leaves behind many beloved extended family members and friends with whom he shared his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Theresa Webb, his sister-in-law Jane Smith, his brother-in-law CJ Gooch, his brother Don (Sally) Smith, his brother William (Charlotte) Smith, and his sister Irene Robertson.

Lonnie's interests were as practical as they were diverse. He was a man who found solace in the sanctuary of his garage, where he could often be found welding or tinkering with a beloved old tractor. His collection of old tractors, tools and "stuff" was legendary, and he was the quintessential handyman, always able to fix anything that needed repair. Lonnie's love for his front yard was evident to all who passed by; he took great pride in watering the lawn by hand, ensuring it remained lush and green. He and Alice also owned and operated Smith's Store in Blanca for 30+ years.

Lonnie Lee Smith's legacy is one of love, craftsmanship, and a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his spirit will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
