Linda Gay Howard, known by many as "Ms. Hall," a beacon of kindness and perennial source of inspiration, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, in La Jara, Colorado, enveloping the end of a life as vibrant and nurturing as the flower gardens she so lovingly tended. Born in Alamosa, Colorado, on April 5, 1948, to George Edward Schilthuis and Blanche Louise (Weaver) Schilthuis, Linda grew into a remarkable woman whose gentle spirit and friendly demeanor enriched the lives of everyone she encountered.
With deep roots in her community, Linda's life journey was one of devotion and service. After earning her Master's Degree in education from Adams State College, she steadfastly chose the path of imparting knowledge and shaping futures. For over 40 years, Linda dedicated herself to teaching, sharing her passion for learning with students at schools in La Jara, Alamosa, Ordway, Nucla, Lamar, Wiley, and Sangre de Cristo. It was a testament to her impact as an educator, for over forty years, that she not only taught generations of students but also some of their children and even grandchildren, creating a legacy of enlightenment that will be felt for years to come.
Her immeasurable love extended beyond the classroom, especially towards her cherished family. She is survived by her loving husband, Lynn Howard, who had been her steadfast partner since their marriage on December 21, 1997, in Alamosa. Linda also leaves behind her daughter, Casse (Maria) Hall who was "the apple of her eye." She is also survived by her her siblings Lonnie (Vesta) Schilthuis of Northglenn, CO and Janet (Michael) Yohn of Alamosa, CO. Her nephews Eddie (Donna) Schilthuis, Keith Schilthuis and Kirk Schilthuis and niece Brenda Yohn. Linda had three step-children Kris (Beth) Howard, Robert (Cheryl) Howard, and Wendy (Marshall) Booker and 9 step grandchildren. Linda is proceeded in death by her parents George and Blanche Schilthuis and her nephew Darren Schilthuis. Her loving family as well as numerous friends, former students and fellow teachers will continue to hold dear the memories of Linda's thoughtful guidance, warmth and fun loving spirit.
Linda's zest for life was reflected in her personal interests and hobbies. An avid reader, she journeyed through countless worlds and tales. Linda had a particular fondness for the rhythm and cadence of music. She loved to sing along to oldies and country music but her "true love" was Elvis Presley. Her treasured concert stub is a nostalgic emblem of her love for "The King." Linda loved playing board games and spent numerous hours sitting around tables with family and friends. Linda never forgot a face or name whether it be a former student or someone she hadn't seen in years. She was full of wisdom but also had an ornery but funny spirit which her loved ones will always hold dear.
Described by those who knew her as kind, friendly, fun and thoughtful, Linda's influence extended far beyond her familial and professional circles, touching the lives of numerous extended family members, students, and friends. She shall be remembered not only for the knowledge she imparted but also for the joy, love, and beauty she instilled in the ordinary moments of life. The tapestry of memories she leaves behind, woven with care and devotion, will continue to provide comfort and guidance for all who loved her in the years to come.
