Obituary

Kenneth Wayne Michel of Monte Vista, Colorado, known for his generosity, helpfulness, and positive spirit, passed away August 4, 2026, at the age of 63. Known as Ken or Kenny, he was born November 9, 1962, and grew up in Monte Vista.

Kenny was a successful photographer, musician, craftsman, mechanic, businessman, and father. He had a passion for helping people and was known for being reliable. He approached life with curiosity and was never afraid to ask, “Why?”—often followed by, “What if?” His natural curiosity helped him understand how things worked and find solutions to any problem. He was multifaceted and had a rare ability to balance the many aspects of his business and interests.

Kenny loved classic cars and Volkswagens, appreciating the craftsmanship, ingenuity, and character of things built in another era. He enjoyed understanding how things worked and, whenever possible, repairing, restoring, modifying, or improving them rather than simply replacing them.

Music was a lifelong passion. Kenny began playing drums in early childhood and continued exploring new instruments, songwriting, and recording throughout his life. He was an exceptionally talented musician with a natural ability to bring people and music together, whether performing, writing songs, or helping conduct music.

Kenny began his career working on pinsetters and later expanded into repairing printers and toner cartridges. He could spend hours diagnosing a mechanical problem simply because he wanted to understand why it wasn't working. His determination to find a solution helped make KBS Enterprises a successful business, which he operated since 1997.

Photography became a significant part of Kenny’s working life. He photographed landscapes, professional businesses, and school sports, creating images that captured lasting memories. He enjoyed the combination of technical skill and creativity that photography required and had an eye for capturing people at their best.

Kenny took great pride in his children, Amber Michel and Benjamin Michel. He enjoyed watching them grow into their own lives and sharing with them the many lessons and experiences that his life brought.

Sadie, his beloved dog and faithful companion, was often by his side and could frequently be found accompanying Kenny on errands and service calls.

Kenny leaves behind a legacy of countless stories and memories shared by the people who knew him, along with photographs, music, and machines that would not be here without his skill and dedication.

Kenneth is survived by his brother, Robert Michel; sister, Sharron Wallen; and his two children, Amber Michel and Benjamin Michel. He was preceded in death by his father, George Michel, and his mother, Cora Michel.

A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. September 18, 2026, at Valley Church of the Nazarene, 228 Madison St., Monte Vista, Colorado.

The family welcomes written stories and memories from those whose lives Kenny touched. They hope these stories will become a lasting collection of the many ways he made a difference in the lives of others. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations through GoFundMe to help them through this transition. https://gofund.me/149f8e45a
