Joseph “Joe” T. Ortega, 74, a longtime resident of Alamosa and former resident of Monte Vista, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly on July 1, 2026. Joseph was born on February 17, 1952, to the late Louie Ortega and Eva Valdez. Joe was a proud graduate of Monte Vista High School, Class of 1970. He dedicated many years of service as the Custodial Supervisor at Adams State College until his retirement in 1992. Retirement, however, did not slow him down. He went on to become the Bar Manager for both VFW Post 899 and Elks Lodge BPOE 1297. Joe was deeply devoted and a dedicated member to the Elks, serving as Past Chaplain of Alamosa Elks BPOE 1297 and currently as the Tiler. At the time of his passing, he was also proudly serving on the Board of Directors of the Alamosa Seniors Citizens Center. Joe embraced life and enjoyed spending his time doing the things he loved most. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who found peace in the outdoors. He especially enjoyed gathering with friends at the Elks Lodge, where he loved playing bingo, joining poker games, and competing in pool tournaments. Joe also enjoyed trying his luck gambling, watching classic Western movies, and cheering on his beloved Denver Broncos. Above all, Joe cherished every moment spent with his family, who were the center of his life and his greatest source of joy. Joe is survived by his loving daughter, Grace (Matthew) Fernandez; his grandson, James (Alyssa Chavez) Ortega; his granddaughter, Mia (Kody Brubacher) Ortega; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Azalea Ortega, Brian Brubacher, Alfonse Ortega-Chavez, and Kaylani Brubacher. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and many dear friends. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, the late Louie Ortega and Eva Valdez; his beloved son, Anthony Ortega; and his brother, Gilbert Ortega. A Celebration of Life honoring Joe will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Elks Lodge BPOE 1297 in Alamosa. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. A private family burial will take place at a later date at the Alamosa Municipal Cemetery. Joe will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his years of faithful service to his community, and the many friendships he built throughout his life. Whether he was lending a helping hand, sharing stories and laughter at the Elks Lodge, or spending time with those he loved most, Joe made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. His memory will be treasured, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
