Obituary

James Gary Jones, known affectionately as Gary to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, at his home in Fox Creek, Colorado, surrounded by his adoring family. Born on July 18, 1949, in Washington DC, Gary's life was a testament to the joy and love he brought to everyone he encountered.

He found his calling in law enforcement, dedicating many years as a narcotics officer and serving as the Conejos County Jail Administrator. His commitment to safety and justice was unwavering, and his impact on the community was profound. Following his law enforcement career, Gary became the owner and operator of Conejos River Campground, where he was the heart and soul of the establishment for 23 years. His warm presence and captivating stories made the campground a home away from home for countless returning visitors.

His love for his family was immeasurable. He was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Pamela Bode Jones for 44 years, and a cherished father to his children, Lyndsey (Josh) Salazar of Antonito CO, Ross (Camry) Jones of Alamosa, CO, Laura Beth (Tom) Sullivan of Murrells Inlet SC, Jamie (Mindy) Jones of Elberta AL, Christina (John) Martin of Beavercreek OH. Gary's legacy continues through his 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Gary's siblings, Nancy Willis, Barbara (Chuck) Barall, and Karen (Phillip) Davidson, along with his mother-in-law, Jeanette Bode, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, will fondly remember his spirited nature. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Maeoma "Bama" Jones, his brother Grady Jones, and his father-in-law, Albert Bode.

Gary's interests and passions painted the picture of a life well-lived. An ardent Auburn University sports fan, he eagerly anticipated each football season, his spirit undimmed by time. Gary loved his hometown of Auburn, Alabama. His love for the great outdoors was evident in his passion for bass, crappie, and bluegill fishing and camping. Family game nights to include games such as Chicken Foot, Yhatzee, dice, and others, were a source of joy and laughter, as were the sunflowers he adored, and the sweets and candy he could never resist. Gary's love for old western music, western movies, and icons like John Wayne were a hallmark of his character, with "Gunsmoke," "The Andy Griffith Show," and "Support Your Local Sheriff" among his favorites. Gary was an avid coffee drinker, and started his daily coffee breaks and storytelling, nicknamed "The Liars Club" where anybody that wanted to join him on the back porch near the campground was welcomed.

To say Gary was funny, friendly, and spirited would be an understatement. Every nurse who cared for him, every friend he made, and every life he touched would attest to his charismatic and loving nature. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and an unwavering love for his family.

As we bid farewell to Gary, we celebrate a life that was full to the brim with love, laughter, and the unwavering spirit of a man who was truly one of a kind. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Gary's family would like to extend a special thank you to the local nurses and first responders that took such great care of him for the last several years. Your compassion and care did not go unnoticed.
