Gaylon E.
Mortensen
March 3, 1923 – December 31, 2024
Sanford – Gaylon E. Mortensen
Gaylon E. Mortensen March 3, 1923- December 31, 2024.
Gaylon E. Mortensen, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, was born on March 3, 1923, in Sanford, Colorado, to Holm Eugene and Effie Amelia Mortensen. He was the fourth of six children.
Growing up, Gaylon embraced the challenges of farm life, from harrowing fields and plowing with horses to herding sheep. His love for basketball started early, leading him to be part of the original Mortensen team and Al's bakery team.
Gaylon married the love of his life, Doris Mae Hostetter, on October 16, 1943. They later sealed their marriage in the Mesa Arizona Temple of the LDS Church. Together, they raised their children on the family farm and sheep ranch, teaching them valuable life skills and instilling a love for the outdoors.
Gaylon's passion for firearms and hunting was well-known, and he shared many memorable trips with his family. He also found joy in his work as a mail carrier, a role he fulfilled until his early eighties.
Gaylon is survived by his children, Cal (Kathy) of Fort Mojave, AZ; Paula (Scott) McCarroll of La Jara, CO; Loren (Shauna) of Sanford, CO; and Lisa (Randy) Hawkins of Rio Rancho, NM. He leaves behind 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Now reunited with his beloved Dori, his legacy of love, hard work, and family endures.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 10:45 Monday, January 6, 2025 with a funeral service at 11:00 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Sanford 1st Ward. 775 Main Street Sanford, Colorado 81151. Burial will follow the services at Sanford Cemetery.
