Obituary

Frederick George Havens, 94, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at the Veterans Community Living Center at Homelake, Monte Vista, Colorado. Fred was born in Toledo, Ohio to William G. Havens and Mary E. (Dartch) Havens on December 14, 1930. Fred served in the army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He received an honorable discharge and enjoyed telling stories of his service.

Mary Delores (Cudney) Havens, 91, passed away on February 28, 2025 at the San Luis Care Center in Alamosa, Colorado. Mary was born in Grand Rapid, Michigan to William H. Cudney and Dorothy V. (Green) Cudney on March 10, 1933.

Fred and Mary were married February 22, 1971. They each had five children, and blended the two families. Fred was preceded in death by two of his children; Robyn K. Havens and James Dale Havens. His surviving children are Cindy Macdonall (Paul), Sandra Palinkas (Brad) and Donald Havens, all of Tampa, Florida. Mary's surviving children are William Havens of Alamosa, CO; Debra (Havens) Jones of Pueblo, CO; Karen (Havens) Eastman of Shepherd, Michigan; Thomas Havens (Marilyn) of Alamosa and Mary (Havens) Owens of Alamosa. They also shared 24 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.

Fred and Mary grew up in Grand Ledge, Michigan and both enjoyed ice skating. They loved traveling and spent their later years as snowbirds, visiting family in many different states. They moved to Alamosa in 1978, and in between their travels would make their way back for a season or two, ultimately residing there permanently since 2011.

It was a commonly held belief among the family that Fred and Mary would be unable to live without one another, often stated they would die withing three weeks of one another. As it turned out, it was only three days. Fred and Mary Havens were loved dearly and will be missed greatly.

A double grave side service will be held at the Veterans Cemetery at Homelake in Monte Vista, Colorado on March 8, 2025 at 11:00 am. A viewing will occur at Rogers Mortuary in Alamosa, Colorado between 5 pm and 7 pm on March 7, 2025. A meal following will be held at Calvary of Monte Vista Church at 2160 Sherman Avenue.

We called him Grumpy. The patriarch of the Havens family. The last of the real cowboys, a legend in his own right, a hero in my own opinion. He taught us the importance of safety with a gun. "They're a tool, same as a hammer, but you'll get much worse than a sore thumb if you use it wrong". I've heard many an embellishment about Fred Havens and as one of his youngest grandson's I believed every one of them, except one. You see, Grumpy was never grumpy to me. Though as nails like John Wayne, smooth as a good whiskey like Johnny Cash, mysterious like Clint Eastwood, but he was never "Grumpy" to me. Most of you know how squirly I was as a kid, but when I was alone with Grandpa, he had my attention. I soaked in every word he spoke. Not because my siblings and cousins taught me to fear him, but because he taught me to love and respect him. He taught me how to spell church, C.H.I.AM.C.H...He taught me how to tie a fish hook and clean a fish before I could ride a bike (or at least around the same time). He taught me how to aim and shoot my first bb gun and bow. He taught me how to throw a knife and hatchet as well as sharpen and maintain them. How to reload ammo, oil a slide and how to hit a clay pigeon. He taught me to love baseball and to pull my thumb out of my fist. How to gamble and that Grandma always knew best. That my brothers loved me and would always protect me, even though they picked on me, that John Wayne was just a man, but a "damn good one". Most important, he taught me that there's always light in the darkness, you just gotta wait for the light to appear on its own time. He walked the line for each and everyone of us. He protected us and I am convinced that he would endure the ring of fire for any one in his family. He was stern and that respect, but he loved us with every bit of his ability. His smile lit up a room and his laugh assured me that everything, everywhere was going to be okay. Grandpa was my hero. The strongest, toughest and most amazing old man I've ever known.
