Carlos N.
Henderson
September 9, 1938 – April 13, 2026
Dr. Carlos "Neil" Henderson, known affectionately as "Neilbug" to his family, was a devoted husband, stepfather, grandfather, brother, veteran, educator, and straight-shooter who passed away on April 13, 2026, surrounded by family, after a life defined by resilience, service, and a kind of tough love that, for those who knew him, made all the difference.
Born September 9, 1938, in Phoenix, AZ, Neil was the son of Carlos Orbrey Henderson and Allie Mae Chapman. Raised by a school cook and a barber, Neil often joked that despite growing up in a barbershop, they had "the worst damn haircuts in town" - a reflection of his blunt humor and lifelong ability to laugh at himself.
Neil grew up alongside his brother, Oscar, and his early years were shaped by both humor and hardship, including the loss of his father.
He was an athlete in his youth, playing football for Idaho State University before being drafted into the United States Army. He served in Korea, where he also played football, carrying that same grit and discipline into everything he did.
Neil earned his PhD in education and dedicated his career to serving children and youth with disabilities. While working in Berrien County, Michigan, he contributed to early efforts supporting federal special education law (PL 94-142) and helped develop approaches for translating student goals into clear, measurable, individualized outcomes. His work was referenced in professional publications and helped shape early special education practices.
As a Special Education Administrator, Neil made lasting contributions across multiple districts, including Berrien County, MI; Greeley School District in Greeley, CO; San Luis Valley BOCES in Alamosa, CO; and the Black Hawk Area Special Education District in Moline, IL. He served on the Colorado Superintendents Advisory Council from 1989 to 1996. His commitment to education was further reflected through his work with Adams State College Extended Studies and his induction into Phi Delta Kappa.
A lifelong lover of golf, Neil found joy on the course, where his sharp wit and curmudgeonly charm were always on full display. He even scored a hole-in-one at Country View Golf Course, a moment he quietly took pride in.
Though he had no biological children, Neil became a steady and meaningful presence in the lives of those around him. He was a devoted stepfather to Charles (Sheila) Sanchez, Jodi Sanchez, and Dana Sanchez, and a proud grandfather to Peyton and Landon Sanchez (children of Charles Sanchez), Markis Sandoval (son of Jodi Sanchez), and Tyler Weaver (son of Dana Sanchez). He is also remembered by Jill Krause of Michigan, a lifelong friend.
Neil stepped in without hesitation when his family needed him, often caring for his grandsons and showing up for his friends and loved ones when it mattered most.
He was also a man of quiet battles and remarkable strength, living as a recovering alcoholic and maintaining his sobriety for 39 years - a reflection of his determination and resolve.
Neil was preceded in death by his wife, Arla Henderson, whom he married in November 1996; his brother, Oscar; both of his parents; and his grandson, Peyton Sanchez.
He is deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by his friends and family.
Rogers Family Mortuary is in care of the cremation and arrangements. In accordance with his wishes, no formal services will be held. To leave online words of comfort, remembrances of Neil, and tributes for his family, please visit www.RogersFunerals.com
