Arthur Eugene
Sharpley
December 12, 1937 – April 26, 2025
Arthur Eugene Sharpley was born December 12, 1937 to David and Minta Sharpley. He grew up in Denver, Colorado, the middle of five children. He met the love of his life, Jeanne Newman, at a roller-skating rink when he was 17 years old. They married May 20 th 1956 and had three children.
Art worked at various jobs in the Denver and South Park areas, and then in 1956 joined the Colorado National Guard, becoming an airplane mechanic at Buckley Air Force Base. He loved planes, and worked for 17 years as a flight mechanic. He spent a year of his life serving his country in the Vietnam War during the TET Offensive. He finally returned to his loving family on April 16, 1969. He continued working at Buckley Air Force Base, and also joined the Air Force Reserves, where he became a flight engineer for C-141 cargo planes. He served in the Gulf War, Desert Storm, and Desert Shield. Through his extensive flying career, he visited every continent, including Antarctica. He retired from military service after 41 years at the rank of Master Sargent.
In 1971 Art and his family purchased a farm in Mesita, Colorado, and farmed there until 2006 when they moved to the Penrose area.
Art was known for his sense of humor and was always quick with a joke. He lightened the load of everyone around him with his humor and love. He was a life-long Denver Broncos fan and bet "a lousy quarter" on them any time he had the chance. He had a strong faith and the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Art went to be with his Savior Jesus Christ on April 26, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeanne; his children, Art Jr., Marie Gunther, Mary Kester (Mike); his brothers, Walter and Dave Sharpley; his grandchildren, Lori Vessels (Colten), Sara Jackson (Jay), and Thomas Kester (Beth), as well as seven great-grandchildren. His encouragement and love carried his family far. He will be greatly missed.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at Fort Garland Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. A lunch and remembrance will be held at the Blanca-Fort Garland Community Center following the graveside service.
