Obituary

Alfred Wesley (Pete) Magee lll, 71, passed away peacefully in his sleep Monday, May 15, 2023 in Alamosa, CO. Pete was born February 28, 1952, son of late Naval aviator Cmdr. Alfred Wesley Magee, Jr. and Jeanne Magee Tucker of Arden Courts in Virginia Beach, VA.

Pete graduated from Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, VA, in 1970, Randolph Macon College in Ashland, VA in 1974, and received his Masters Degree in Geology summa cum laude from Old Dominion University in 1985. He was awarded his Doctorate in Physical Geography from University of Oxford, Oxford, UK in 1989. While attending Oxford he received the Overseas Student Research Award, and Senior Scholar Status (competitive award), Hertford College, Oxford, UK.

When Pete moved to the San Luis Valley in 1990 to begin his career by teaching at Adams State University, he brought his remarkable intellect, his cheerful wit and his dedication to a community that embraced him as "one of their own." His friendship was cherished by many as he gave tirelessly to his community.

He served as a professor at Adams State, developing a course teaching Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that served as the basis for his long career in that field. He served as a consultant, then coordinator and executive director of the SLV GIS/GPS Authority, as a Board Member of the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust, 16 years on the Alamosa Planning Commission, Founding Board member and treasurer for Society Hall, Emergency manager for Alamosa County culminating in a Governor's award for excellence. As President and owner of Integrated Land Services where he provided unparalleled service as a geospatial data provider and also managed the SLV GIS/GPS Authority, he worked tirelessly on the E911 system for the 6 counties in the San Luis Valley and he served as a Board Member and President of GIS Colorado, sharing his wisdom and expertise that he learned "the hard way."

He is survived by two sons, Jack and Miles, who reside in England, four sisters, Patricia Magee Vaughan (David) of Alexandria, VA, Judith Magee Stant (Peter) of Naples,FL and Redding,CT, Leslie Magee Fulcher of Norfolk, VA, and Nancy Magee Martin (John) of Weems, VA, step sisters Beverly Nelms (Ray) of Richmond, VA and Stephanie Little (Mickey) of Colonial Heights, VA,numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and his mother, Jeanne Magee Tucker (102 years old) of Arden Courts in Virginia Beach, VA.

In addition to his father, Pete was predeceased by his step father, John Edward Tucker, step mother Charlotte Norris Magee, and his daughter, Meghan.

The family is planning a Celebration of Pete's Life in Alamosa, CO on July 15, 2023 to be held at Society Hall, 400 Ross Avenue at 10:30 am. A second service will be held in Virginia Beach,VA at a later date.

Our beloved brother, father and friend, you left us too soon and we look forward to being together again. Sleep well and, in your very own words at your father's funeral twenty years ago, we'll catch you on the other side.
