Obituary for Samuel Ben Mestas

Samuel Ben Mestas, 80, passed away in his home on February 18, 2016. Sam was born to Esmael and Doloritas Maestas in Capulin, Colorado on September 16, 1935.

Sam led a long and eventful life. He joined the United States Air Force in 1953 at the age of eighteen and spent 26 years serving his country as a surgical technician. He not only served on multiple bases here in the State but also served abroad in Germany, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. He was able to retire with honors from the Air Force In 1976 but that didn’t stop him from continuing his work in the medical field. After retiring from the Airforce Sam went on to work at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center for 20 more years until he was able to retire from there as well. Although Sam was known to be a hard worker that doesn’t mean he didn’t know how to have fun and enjoy life. He loved being outside hunting and fishing and just being out in nature. But when he wasn’t able to make it to the mountains you could find him having a great time bowling or shooting pool. And it wasn’t rare to find him chatting it up with his buddies at the local VFW or American Legion.

Sam is survived by his children: Leroy Lopez of Alamosa and Antonia Ortega of Santa Fe, New Mexico. His Grand Daughter, Alicia (Arturo) Ortiz of Alamosa. His Great- Grand Daughter, Noemi Adame. His Siblings: Gilbert Maestas of Monte Vista, John (Luella) Maestas of Antonito, Adelmo (Helen) Maestas of Albion, Idaho, Floyd (Terrie) Maestas of Farmington, New Mexico, Bernal (Connie) Maestas of Alamosa, Trinidad (Nancy) Maestas of La Jara, Sarah (Raymond) Valdez of Capulin, Ernestina ( Ambrosio Jr.) Mondragon of La Jara, Frances (Roy) Hall of Colorado Springs, Colorado. His Sister in Law, Emily Maestas of Albion, Idaho. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Esmael and Doloritas Maestas. His brother, Santiago Ed Maestas. And his Sister in Law, Lydia Maestas.

Cremation was chosen. A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M. on February 23, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. A Funeral Mass will be held on February 24, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. also at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with inurnment to follow at the Capulin Cemetery in Capulin, Colorado.
