Obituary for Richard Andrew Johnson Jr.

Alamosa, CO- Richard Andrew Johnson, Jr., 70, passed away at his home in Alamosa on February 29th, 2020. Richard was born on February 12th, 1950 to Richard Andrew Johnson, Sr. (Dick) and Mary Marjorie (Dunn) Johnson in Durango, CO. Richard was an active member of the San Luis Valley Community for more than 65 years. He enjoyed collecting guns, shooting, reloading, and in his younger years, hunting. Richard was an active member of the Rio Grande Sportsman’s Club and International Single Shot Association and participated in many Schuetzenfest competitions at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM. He was a longtime member of the Alamosa Lions Club and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for dedicated humanitarian services.

He is survived by his cousin Val Hobson of Mancos, CO; his best friend who he considered his brother since they were 3 years old, Doug McLellan of Las Vegas, NV; uncles Ed Miller of Albuquerque, NM and David Hite of Tucson, AZ; along with other cousins, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dick and Marjie; brother Larry Johnson; 2 infant sisters; aunt Nellie (George) Greer and uncle Charles Miller.

Rogers Family Mortuary of Alamosa is in care of the arrangements. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday March 9th, 2020 at 6 PM at Rogers Family Mortuary on Alamosa with a viewing beforehand starting at 5 pm, also at Rogers Family Mortuary. A Burial Service on Tuesday March 10th, 2020 at 1 PM at the Ignacio East Cemetery in Ignacio, CO. In lieu of flowers Richard’s favorite local charities are the Alamosa Ambulance Service and the “Friends of the 169” Train Restoration Group.
