Longtime Alamosa resident and educator Phyllis Goettsch, 77, died July 22, 2017 at her home in Alamosa under hospice care.

Phyllis was born March 12, 1940 in Hereford, Texas to William and Wilma Goettsch. She grew up in Hereford, graduated from Hereford High School in 1958, and attended West Texas State A&M University in Canyon, Texas, for both her BBA and MBA degrees.

After graduating from college, she worked in Amarillo, Texas as a legal secretary for Diamond Shamrock Corporation (now Valero Oil Company) from 1962 to 1970. She worked on her master’s degree from 1970 to 1971 and worked in Amarillo as a Legal Secretary for Lockhart, Lindsey & Neil from 1971 to 1972.

Phyllis moved to Alamosa, Colorado in 1972 and for the next 26 years was a vocational business teacher at Alamosa High School, retiring in 1998. During her teaching tenure, she served as department chair for 20 years, office work coordinator for 10 years, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) advisor for 14 years, and class sponsor for many years. She was also an FBLA District Advisor for 2 years and served on the Colorado State Board Of Education Advisory Committee for 4 years. While a teacher, she belonged to numerous local, state and national professional organizations. Phyllis taught most of the classes offered in the Business Department including keyboarding and computer applications, but her favorite classes were shorthand and office practice.

She loved the mountains and spent many hours there checking out backroads, skiing, camping, hiking and photographing wildflowers and fall foliage. She also enjoyed golfing, bowling and watching football, especially the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys.

Phyllis was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Alamosa, having served on the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, Staff Parish Relations Committee, Worship Committee, Memorial Committee, Care Team and as a Communion Steward as well as a member of the Bell Choir for many years. She had also been a member and officer at the Cattails Women’s Golf Association, the Southern Peaks Retired School Employees Association and P.E.O.

Survivors include her sister Billee (Mark) Landrum of Amarillo, Texas; her niece Kara Landrum of Fort Worth, TX, her nephew Justin (Erin) and great-nephews Keegan and Kelton Landrum of Amarillo, Texas, all of whom she loved dearly.

Her mother and her father preceded her in death.

Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Alamosa, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in her name to the P.E.O. Chapter DP Scholarship in care of the funeral home office, 205 State Ave. Alamosa, CO 81101. A celebration of life gathering will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the Welcome Center of the First United Methodist Church, 501 Main Street, Hereford, TX 79045.
