Obituary for Peggy Doyle Luster (Walstrom)

Peggy Doyle Luster passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on November 5, 2023. Peggy was born on November 11, 1946 at Alamosa Community Hospital to Jane (Schecter) Walstrom and Gene Walstrom.

Peggy was raised on the Schecter ranch, south of Alamosa. She attended school in La Jara and graduated in 1964. She was part of the last graduating class of La Jara High School. Peggy was a cheerleader and participated in band for all 4 years. During high school, she met and dated her soon to be husband Louie Luster. After high school, Peggy moved in with her best friend. She attended college for one year at Adams State College while working part-time at Montgomery Ward. After college, she began a full-time position with Montgomery Ward as a catalog manager. On June 19, 1965, Peggy and Louie were married at Sacred Heart Church in Alamosa. They were married for 58 years. Peggy and Louie were blessed with three daughters: Bridget, Shelly, and Natalie. During this time, she worked at Arapahoe Super Market as a bookkeeper. Then Peggy chose to stay at home and babysit neighborhood children while raising her three daughters. She started working at Mt. Carmel Credit Union once her two younger daughters started school. Peggy completed her working career at City Market. She retired after 31 years. Throughout her retirement, Peggy would always be found spending time with her loved ones. She was the greatest caretaker to her mother and mother-in-law in the last of their years, and made it a priority to support her daughters and nine grandchildren in all of their life events. She was also very active in the Sacred Heart Parish and the community of Alamosa as a whole. She was a devout Catholic. She found joy in the simplest pleasures in life. Peggy loved her flowers, and growing tomatoes in the spring and summer. She enjoyed canning green chile in the fall to last through the cold winter season, and loved quiet evenings crocheting or curling up to a good book. She was well-known for her strong-will and courageous spirit, and will be remembered most for her generosity towards others.

Peggy is preceded in death by her parents Jane and Gene Walstrom. She is survived by her husband Louie, her brother Tom (Diane) Walstrom, her children: Bridget (Joey) Romero, Shelly (Matt) Mendenhall, Natalie (Gary) Martin, her grandchildren: Josh (Micaela) Romero, Amanda Romero, Dylan Romero, Shaylynn (Noah) Jones, Madison Mendenhall, Kendall Mendenhall, Samantha Martin, Alexis Martin, Haley Martin, and one great-grandchild: Olivia Jones.
