Nora Ann McAloon Holmes 19?? To 9/25/2015

Nora Ann McAloon Holmes, 39++, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2015, at San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa, CO. She was born in Darlington, WI, on Feb. 20th,19??, to Jack & Gladys McAloon. She attended high school in Darlington, WI. She married the love of her life, John Russell Holmes, on April 18, 1959, at Holy Rosary church in Darlington, WI. Nora supported John’s endeavors to excel in the field of education as they moved from Kenosha, WI, to Knoxville, TN, to Laramie, WY, to Big Stone Gap, VA, to Aurora, CO to Littleton, CO, before finally arriving in Alamosa, CO, in 1976. Nora graduated from Adams State College in 1986, after two of her children, and became a teacher at Trinidad State Junior College. She then moved to the Alamosa school district where she taught business classes and eventually became the librarian for the high school. She was responsible for coordinating the relocation of the entire high school library from OMS to the new High School facility on Craft Dr. in Alamosa, CO. After retiring, Nora was very active in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as well as in the community. She volunteered regularly at the Alamosa Welcome Center and was a participant in PEO and the Red Hat Society. Her hobbies included playing games with her family, bridge with her friends, and other varied, unique interests. She had an incredible zest for life and touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Nora loved to travel and knew no boundaries when it came to life. In the words of one of Nora’s good friends, Lenny Martinez, “she was a fresh breath of insanity in a world gone crazy.”

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, John Holmes, both her parents, and her brother Danny McAloon. She will be missed very deeply by her family, John R. Holmes , Jr. (Barbara) of Nashville, TN, Jeni R. Jack-Goodwin (Greg) of Alamosa, CO, James R. “Fuzzy” Holmes (Traci) of Center, CO, and Jessica R. King (Kenny) of Alamosa, CO. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mitch (Meg) Holmes of Nashville, TN, Erica (Diego) Trujillo of Taos, NM, Hunter & Bailey Jack of Alamosa, CO, Stoan & Conner Holmes of Center, CO, Eric Wood of Bella Vista, AR, and Lyric & Seth Wood of Alamosa, CO, and her great grandchildren, Santiago Trujillo of Alamosa, CO, Kaitlyn King of Chama, NM and John Michael “Jack” Holmes of Nashville, TN. Also surviving is her sister Ellen Prather of Madison, WI, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be an inurnment at the Alamosa Cemetery at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 24th followed by a celebration of life/Irish Wake at Society Hall, 400 Ross Avenue, Alamosa, CO at 4:00 pm on October 24th. To celebrate Nora’s love for drinks and desserts, light refreshments will be served. In lieu of flowers, plants, or gifts please make donations to the Society Hall of Alamosa, CO or your charity of choice in care of Nora Holmes and please recycle!
