Obituary for Mona Jean Taylor-Wilcox (Sweet)

Mona Taylor-Wilcox, long time resident of Center and Monte Vista passed away Thursday May 5, 2016 at the age of 90. She was surrounded by several of her children, grandchildren and a great grandchild.

She was born March 8, 1926 in Henrietta, Oklahoma. Mona was the only daughter of Elizabeth Lucille Pryor and Fred Victor Sweet. A few years after her birth the family moved to New Mexico where they homesteaded near Ancho, then later moving to the mountains near Bonita. It was there that she met Carl J. Taylor of Blanca, Colorado. After the war they married in Globe, Arizona on October 11, 1945. After marrying they moved back to Blanca, Colorado where they farmed for several years. They then moved to the Center area where they farmed and raised their 5 children. In 2008 they moved to the Colorado Veterans Center at Homelake, where Carl passed away. Later meeting Sam Wilcox whom she would marry. Most important to her was her family and her unwavering faith in God.

Preceding her in death is her father Fred Sweet, mother Elizabeth Pryor, first husband Carl Taylor of 67 years and her second husband Sam Wilcox. Mona is survived by her brother Fred (Mary) Sweet of Richmond, Kentucky. Daughter Bernadette (Herb) Myers of Del Norte, Colorado. Son Herb (Marilyn) Taylor of Tulsa Oklahoma. Son Calvin (Sherry)Taylor of Alamosa, Colorado. Daughter Debbie (Gerald) Palmgren of Monte Vista, Colorado and daughter Carla Smith of Monte Vista, Colorado. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Friday May 13, 2016 at the Feed Store Training Center 4900 E County Rd 2 S, Monte Vista, Colorado at 2 p.m. Arrangements are being made by Rogers Family Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mona’s memory can be made to the Colorado Veterans Center at Homelake through Rogers Family Mortuary. Please make checks out to Veterans Center.
