Obituary for Milton Neal Knapp

Alamosa resident Milton “Neal” Knapp, 94, passed away on June 4, 2021. He died peacefully in his home which he built 70 years ago. Neal was born on October 14, 1926 in Chester, Oklahoma to William Milton and Lillian Agnes (Houser) Knapp. At the age of 5, Neal’s family moved to Westcliffe, Colorado. The family then settled in the Waverly district south of Alamosa when Neal was 11 years old. During World War II, at the young age of 17, Neal joined the Merchant Marines. He served on an oil tanker supplying fuel to overseas troops. He married Patricia June Higel January 28, 1946. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this past January. After the war, Neal began a 39 year career with Public Service Company of Colorado.

Neal and Pat enjoyed travelling. Neal was very proud to tell people that they had visited all 50 states. In addition, they traveled extensively in Canada and Europe. After Neal’s retirement, they could be found enjoying the warm winters in either Texas or Arizona. He enjoyed being in the mountains camping and fishing. Duck hunting was also a favorite pastime. A farmer at heart, his hobby was tending to a huge vegetable garden, raising animals and growing alfalfa on his acreage west of Alamosa. Neal was so proud of his five children and their accomplishments. The grandchildren were also a very important part of his life – always putting a smile on his face.

He is survived by his wife Pat, his children, Kathy (Roger) Peer of Brighton, Colorado, Kristy (Tom) Motz of Grand Junction, Colorado, Roger (Raida) Knapp of Alamosa and Gary (Susan) Knapp of Loveland, Colorado, his daughter-in-law Jill Knapp of Delmar, New York as well as his grandchildren Dan Knapp, Kim (Ruth) Hackford-Peer, Brad (Cia) Peer, Laura (Brendan) Trimboli, Ashleigh Knapp, Megan (Bernard) Bodin, Brandon (Kelly) Motz, Gretchen (Kyle) Sand and Ryan (Kelsey) Motz as well as 11 great grandchildren and other loving extended family.

Neal was preceded in death by his parents, his son Wayne Knapp, his grandson Eric Knapp and his siblings, Bernard Knapp, Donald Knapp and Berniece Ullstrom.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Juana Valdez-Lopez, the Visiting Angel who took such kind and loving care of Neal.
