Obituary for Mary Veretta Haynie
Mary Veretta Jackson Haynie, 97, died December 1, 2020 at the Evergreen Nursing Home in Alamosa where she resided.
Mary was a lifelong resident of the San Luis Valley, born in Sanford on July 6, 1923. She was the eldest girl of Florence Bentley and Victor E. Jackson’s, 11 children.
The Bentley-Jackson clan started with first born Eldon, then Mary, Marie, Edith, Betty, Fred, Richard, Donald, Alice, Kenneth and Danny. The family moved to Alamosa in the 1930’s and was blessed with assistance from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mary never forgot the handmade quilts from the Alamosa Relief Society.
Married at 17 in 1939 to Harold Ray Hiatt, they had 3 children that were raised in Alamosa, Harold Hugh, Judith Kay and Janet Marlene. Mary was married in the Provo, Utah temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1973 to Eric Haynie of Alamosa and was the proud step-mother to his children Robin and Lynn Haynie.
Mary enjoyed all her 8 grandchildren from the eldest born in in 1960 to the 14 great-grandchildren born as recently as 2019.
She worked as a Credit Manager at Montgomery Wards and later on she was a friendly face at Alamosa Community Hospital. She retired many times in her career years, but was frequently called back to help out in to her 70’s. Mary served in many capacities for the LDS Church throughout her faith journey. She had a heart for providing quilts to missionaries, babies, the needy, and all the family. She also loved a good book and a happy movie.
Her interests in homemaking, gardening, celebrating birthdays and holidays with those she loved; enriched her family. Mary was a true lady from dabbing the corners of her mouth as she drank tea or brushing out the wrinkles on an outfit, wrapping her generous gifts, to cards crafted with beautiful penmanship.
To thine own self be true, always have the gospel in your life and anything you do give it your best! Mom and beloved grandma Mary will be greatly missed and we give thanks for the many years she was a prayer warrior for her family.
A Visitation will be held 4:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. A Graveside Service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2020 at the Alamosa Cemetery.
